For the richest possible user interface, you still can't beat Windows applications. A thick client approach leverages your existing investment in desktop computers to provide the most intuitive user interface possible. It also minimizes network traffic because only the data is transmitted across your network. Unfortunately, Windows applications can be difficult and expensive to deploy and maintain, a problem commonly referred to as Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). In order to reduce TCO, many organizations have settled for less capable web-based systems which concentrate all the processing on a central server. This approach reduces your expensive desktop computers to little more than dumb terminals. At Systemsmith, we've taken an approach that provides the best of both worlds: Applications built using the AppFoundry application framework offer a rich graphical user interface based on a tree-style user interface paradigm similar to Microsoft Outlook. AppFoundry shortens the software development process (and lowers costs) because much of the functionality comes from the underlying framework. It also shortens the learning curve because users are already familiar with the tree-style user interface paradigm and all screens work the same way. Our applications also offer low TCO because of our unique "splash screen" technology. Each time a user logs in, their workstation configuration is evaluated against the latest requirements. Any missing or out-of-date files are installed automatically. The whole process takes just a few seconds and is completed behind the scenes while the splash screen is presented to the user. This technology facilitates early application deployment and continuous improvement. Our applications are built using best-of-breed development tools and database engines. We handle all aspects of the software development lifecycle from requirements definition and database design, through prototyping, development, testing, training, deployment, and maintenance. |
